Musical Mondays

Musical Monday – You Found Me, The Fray.

My husband found this song last week and it kinda rocked my world. The lyrics are so powerful. And a little confusing I don’t mind admitting.

What do you think? Lyrics are just below the video.

I found God
On the corner of First and Amistad
Where the west
Was all but won
All alone
Smoking his last cigarette
I said, “Where you been?”
He said, “Ask anything”.

Where were you?
When everything was falling apart?
All my days
Were spent by the telephone
That never rang
And all I needed was a call
That never came
To the corner of First and Amistad

Lost and insecure
You found me, you found me
Lyin’ on the floor
Surrounded, surrounded
Why’d you have to wait?
Where were you? Where were you?
Just a little late
You found me, you found me

In the end
Everyone ends up alone
Losing her
The only one who’s ever known
Who I am
Who I’m not, who I wanna be
No way to know
How long she will be next to me

Early morning
The city breaks
I’ve been callin’
For years and years and years and years
And you never left me no messages
Ya never send me no letters
You got some kinda nerve
Taking all my world

Lost and insecure
You found me, you found me
Lyin’ on the floor
Where were you? Where were you?
Lost and insecure
You found me, you found me
Lyin’ on the floor
Surrounded, surrounded
Why’d you have to wait?
Where were you? Where were you?
Just a little late
You found me, you found me
Why’d you have to wait?
To find me, to find me
Lyrics

**So, what’d you think?**

Hi Lynn, I linked here from Chrystie’s site.

Not sure what to think of this song. For one, it’s not my style. For two, even in poetry and musical lyrics I appreciate better English. Maybe that’s too picky!

Some things I didn’t understand. Was that God smoking a cigarette? If that is the imagery, I don’t know what to make of that unless God they are portraying God as right here in our world.

It does seem like he (or they, don’t know which pronoun to use) is angry at God, and that is ok. The Psalms are full of anger toward God. By the end of a psalm, though, the Psalmist has usually process through his anger and sees God’s bigger purpose or has received God’s comfort. I didn’t get that at the end of this song.

If that is where the singer is – feeling rejected or ignored by God – then that might be the appropriate ending. But this is probably not a song I’d give to my teenager to process through a troubling emotion or situation. The Psalms bring the frustrated reader back to a point of hope, something I didn’t feel with this song.

That may be more than you were looking for, esp from a visitor to your blog. But I will add that you have a very good site. wb

I agree with KM about the poetry aspect and garnering meaning based on our own perspectives and experiences. I think the song is an honest expression of a hurting person. It doesn’t really offer solutions, but it sure does ring familiar with feelings we’ve all had and maybe haven’t wanted to admit. Thanks for sharing, Lynn!

Yeah, great composition here. I really like it. I think this does what all great poetry does, allows the reader to grapple with the meaning and allows the reader to apply the prose to their own emotions and experience.

I think he lost a girl. For some reason I don’t think death. I do think He’s angry that God seems to arrived too late to save what he lost.

I can totally see why this song drew you in, Lynn. I won’t forget those lyrics soon!

I agree, Scott, he was mad because he lost the woman he loved. Maybe to death? Is he still mad at God or glad he’s finally close to God and can find comfort? I usually don’t look into the words of songs so intently, but this one intrigued me. Maybe because I was pretty ticked off at God all through junior high and high school (until I found God before my senior year) . . . Oh, but that’s a whole ‘nother post. LOL.

I would say he lost the woman he loved, and like most people who lose someone they love so deeply he went through a long a miserable period recovering where he was probably mad at God for not being there to save her.

It is a very powerful song. I think the meaning is that he finely found God but it was to late. That is just my view.

I thought the same thing about the confusing lyrics. I love the tune and the beat. It sounds great. It sounds to me like he’s mad at God. I don’t know, maybe I’m just too confused. I do like the song though.
