Musical Mondays is about our favorite music. If you’re a writer, does it inspire your creativity? Cure writer’s block? If you’re not a writer, what do your favorite songs do for you?

I’m a huge fan of Natalie Grant‘s singing. Strong voice. Pure message. Right up my alley. Sure-I like to rock out a little, but sometimes when I slow it down, I get a message that really hits home.

Last week was an interesting week of ups and downs-with both my normal every day life and my world of writing.

What is nice to know is that I have a rock…well, really two…on which I stand: God and Charlie (my hubby). So, I thought this song was perfect to start the week off….

Of the many lyrics found in this facinating song, these are the most important for me:

    I am strong
    All because of you

Who’s your rock on which you stand during the ups and downs life tends to throw at you?

  • MUSICAL MONDAYS–Blog Host Caleb Aspros

Hello. My name is Caleb Aspros. I’m the subject of Lynn Rush’s novel, Guardian. She thought it would be fun to have me host for a week.

My first response was, “Me? A three-hundred-year-old Guardian? What on earth would I have to write about?”

Lynn simply replied, “Duh, you’re a three-hundred-year-old Guardian. You must have some stories tucked up that ancient sleeve of yours.”

So, with the help of my computer savvy fellow Guardian, Madison, I’ll give it a try. It helps that we start with music. This is something I’ve enjoyed over the centuries. But, recently I have found this song, While I’m Waiting, by John Waller.

I know, you probably expected some classical hymn or something, am I right? Despite my resistance to many of the changes over the centuries, my appreciation of music has evolved.

I picked this song for a reason. Lynn tells me it is a very long process getting a book published and involves a lot of waiting. Even though the song is from the movie Fireproof and is about marriage, I think it’s appropriate to all waiting. It’s difficult, but we must persevere.

Enjoy, and I’ll see you tomorrow.

NewBoys, Your Love is Better Than Life.

Okay, these guys are amazing. We went to see them in concert a while back, and it was amazing. I couldn’t hear for a week, but it was worth it. This song, Your Love is Better Than Life, is among my favorites.

Do we get halos & harps? Do we sleep? Do we fly? I dunno
how, when and why this world will finally end,
Speculation’s gonna grow, who knows best, I dunno
I dunno if I should push ahead or stop and grieve,
I lie awake and wonder how to make a city believe,
    I dunno when it’s a ministry and when it’s a show
maybe neither, maybe both, I dunno

I love the songs honesty. A lot of people want answers for a variety of things. Why do bad things happen? What’s going to happen when we die? Why is that person so mean?

I wish I had answers. Like the song says…I dunno. But later in the song, it says “YOUR LOVE IS BETTER THAN LIFE, I look to you ’cause you’re the lover of my soul”

I look to HIM, that’s where I get my peace in all the “I dunnos”

Dead Man, Carry Me, by Jars of Clay

Okay, all the lyrics on this one were amazing, so, to narrow it down to just a few was difficult…but here were my favs:

Carry Me, I’m just a dead man lying on the carpet can’t find a heart beat
Make me breathe, I want to be a new man, tired of the old one, out with the old plan

I couldn’t find an “official” video, but this is what I found online:

Charlie first shared this song with me a couple years ago. At first I was like, “Dead Man?” But then, after I listened to the lyrics a few times, I caught on. It’s all about shedding the old me and movin’ on to the person God wants me to be. It’s a great song. Great message.

There Will Be A Day, Jeremy Camp.

jeremy_07I know, I’ve spotlighted Jeremy Camp before…a few times. But I saw him in concert March 27th, and I just had to share another song of his with you.

He’s got such a great story, and his music reflects that.

He went through a lot with his first wife (who died of cancer.) He had many reasons to turn from faith or get stuck in his anger, but instead, he turned to God.

    He’s so inspiring.

These lyrics are the best (In my opinion):

I know the journey seems so long
You feel your walking on your own
But there has never been a step
Where you’ve walked out all alone

***It just brings home for me that we NEVER walk alone. EVER! God’s always by our side.***

You know how I usually pick out specific lyrics that hit home for me?

Well, I’ll tell ya what…it was hard for me to pick out just a few lyrics on this song. They are all good. It’s a little rap-like, but I love it. TobyMac is awesome when it comes to grabbing my attention. And the words are great, too!

I picked these few lyrics, but below is a link to read them all if you like.

    **
I know you’re all alone in a crowd full of friends
I can see it in your eyes that your fadin’ again
Checking out, moving into your hole
Where the light can’t touch any part of your soul
But hold up and let the river rush in
You can turn around and start livin’ again
Cause your life is a beautiful bloom
In the image of the one that created you

And I’ll keep the light on, for you
Just keep the course, you can weather the storm
I’ll keep the light on, for you
You’ve come this far, don’t you ever lose heart, now
