Own your reflection.
There’s a pretty awesome song out there by Christina Aguilera called Reflections. This phrase from the song really sticks out to me:
Why is my reflection someone I don’t know?
I’ve always wondered that. Because for a long time my reflection didn’t match who I was. I was worried about trying to fit in with people at work. Or be what I thought a wife should be. Confirming to the pressures in the publishing world.
And I didn’t recognize myself when I looked in the mirror.
The mirror doesn’t lie. It can reveal simple things like whether or not you have broccoli in your teeth to the color of your soul.
I think that’s why I really like this song, Reflection. I’ll share the key phrase with you again: Why is my reflection someone I don’t know?
It challenged me to really take a look at who I was. What I believed in. How I wanted to treat people.
I know some struggle with the actual physical image we see in the mirror, and I get that. But I truly think that change-even physical change-starts from the inside out.
Starts with really looking inside yourself to see what the next step should be to having peace about your reflection.
It’s a long process, and for some of us, it’s never ending. And as you’ve seen me write before, it’s all about the small steps. If you’re taking honest, small steps toward change, things will change.
It’s never easy, but keep on trucking. You can do it!!
