Life and Whatnot

Wow, what a ride.

Happy Wednesday Everyone.

What a beautiful start to another HOT day in the desert. I rode 24 miles, 17 of them with a new friend I met on the ride last weekend. A HUGE shout out to Alley (AKA Canada). I met her last weekend on a 50 mile ride with a local Triathlon Training group. She’s from Canada and has only been in the desert for six weeks or so. YIKES–Hot time of year to move, eh? Anyway, I had a blast on our bike ride this morning.

The sun rose as we biked, just peaking up over the hills off to the East. It was spectacular. We climbed a few hills, screamed down one at 39 miles per hour, then dodged some cars to get home safe and sound. It felt great to get out and burn the lungs and the legs.

I finished the last seven miles by myself and the little writer in me got to plotting, re-hashing characters, and fumbling over the whole Deep Point of View I’ve been hearing so much about. I think I actually re-wrote a few scenes in my mind as I climbed a few more hills in that last seven miles.

Getting out and seeing God’s beauty, working up a sweat, and screaming down some big hills sure helps break through the chains of writer’s block, frustrations, or really whatever else is bringing me down. It’s pretty amazing.

In keeping with my title today, Wow, What a Ride, I was only slightly referring to my bike ride this morning. It was really about life in general. While I’m here in the desert screaming down the hills, watching the sun rise, and breaking through some writer’s block and what not, my Dad is up on Colorado attending the funeral of one of his brothers. Talk about a spectrum, huh? His brother finally lost his battle with cancer just before the Fourth of July.

So, I give a prayerful shout out to my Dad and his wife as they go through that. May the words of Psalm 23:4 comfort them: “Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.”

May God bless you all!
