Marriage

  • Fire in the hole

    From my sweet hubby’s bag of funny stories…..

    Ron and Sharon (who celebrated 50 years together) and the little one is RG.
    Ron and Sharon (who celebrated 50 years together) and the little one is RG.

    Over the previous weekend, Charlie’s aunt and uncle (Ron and Sharon) celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. Now, anytime I hear of longevity in a marriage, I have to mention it. Yeah Sharon and Ron!! Whoo-Hoo!! 50 years!!

    ***okay, back to the post***

    “What’s this got to do with Friday Funnies?” You might ask?

    Well, when we heard about the gathering, Charlie started thinking of some of the memories he had of past family gatherings. He told me of one story that had come up more than once during such events.

    It had me rolling on the floor, because I could totally picture Charlie’s dad, RG, doing this.

    RG was about four years old. And you know how four-year-old boys can be, right?

    Busy. Maybe even in a little trouble, right? Well . . . .

    His family was out in the living room having coffee after a dinner or something when suddenly little RG come scurrying out of the kitchen.

    He stops in the middle of the room and says, “I’m gettin’ the hell outta here.” Then bolts out the door. Within seconds, the smell of smoke filtered out from the kitchen.

    Yeah, the very place from which a four-year-old boy just scurried.

    The adults got up to investigate. As they entered the small kitchen they saw flames shoot out from the garbage bin.

    The small fire was quickly snuffed out, but everyone had to chuckle about how the little kid just came out and said, “I’m gettin’ the hell outta here.”

    Of course, the laughing came out much much later . . . .

    Ahhh….memories.

  • The Wedding Surprise

    heart54g~~~

    Love. It’s a beautiful thing, isn’t it?

    I love love. For real.

    I did a series on it around my 12th wedding anniversary last year. It’s creeping up on that time again…13 years come next week. So, I’m sure I’ll do another series on LOVE, cuz it’s just grand.

    So, have you seen this You Tube phenomenon? About the wedding party dancing down the aisle in MN? Yeah, it hit home with me, cuz, well, I’m from Minnesota. No, I didn’t know anyone in this video (LOL) But, you have to check it out.

    It just made me smile. The energy and excitement for one of the most important days of anyone’s life-marriage.

  • WHAT IS LOVE?

    love-11

    Heck, I love love. I even did a couple week long series on it Marriage Rocks and Valentines–Week of Love. I love talking about it, writing about it (I write paranormal romances even), and hearing real – life stories of people living it.

    But what’s the definition of Love?

    The dictionary says: an intense feeling of deep affection

    If you type LOVE into the Bible online, or look in the concordance of the Bible, it’s got many references. My fav is: 13And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love. (1 Corinthians 13:13 NIV)

    Or the one commonly heard at weddings: 4Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. (1 Corinthians 13:4 NIV)

    But what is it? An emotion? Or a choice?

    I’ve heard both . . . What do you think?

    ~~~
    The one event, and most spectacular in my opinion, that demonstrates love as a choice was Jesus dying on the cross for us. That revelation kinda rocked my world in high school.
    Back then I had long lost the idea of true love really even exisiting (broken home, angry teenager, teen-age turmoil……but that’s another post.)
    The dictionary defines emotion as: a natural instinctive state of mind deriving from one’s circumstances, mood, or relationships with others.
    When I first met Charlie, sure, it started out as an emotion. You know, that sudden-loss-of-breath-when-he-walks-in-the-room-feeling . . . But that emotion soon morphed into a choice.
    A choice to spend the rest of our lives together, even when circumstances and moods change . . . as we all know they can and will.
    But yeah, the sudden-loss-of-breath-when-he-walks-in-the-room-feeling is still there too….So, my answer is BOTH!
    So, what do you think love is?
  • ESCAPE
    When’s the last time you escaped the chaos of day-to-day life? Last weekend? Last month? Can’t remember?
    YIKES, is all I can say if you have chosen the last one (Can’t Remember!).
    Anyone who has followed this blog for any length of time knows my husband and I are known to hop on the bikes for some mileage pretty much each weekend. If you follow my Twitter or FaceBook status, you’ll often see, “Off for a ride.”
    This past weekend, we shook it up a bit by throwing in a mountain bike ride! Yep, we still did the road biking on Sunday, but Saturday we stole up into a nearby mountain and pounded out a few miles on some single tracks.
    This is the view of Phoenix from the side of a mountain.
    Yep, we’re still in the city…But within the chaos of the traffic,
    We found this little getaway.
    charlie-and-sheri3This is me and my sweet hubby.
    We’d just made a huge climb up the side of a mountain.
    .
    sheri-on-the-mountain1Had to take my “Rocky” picture at the top. It was such a hard climb, I had to shed a layer and get a picture. I think the temperature had climbed fifty degrees (Can we say exaggerate?) by the time we were done.
    So, after a couple Ciff Bars and some Gatorade, we made our way back down the mountain.
    Such a great escape, and who better to spend the time with than my sweet hubby, Charlie.
    Tell me about your last escape, I’d love to hear.
  • VALENTINE’S DAY STORIES–week of love
    heart1The day of love has flown by yet again. Can you believe it?
    ***
    So, what did you do for Valentine’s Day? Do tell.
    ***
    I remember my favorite Valentine’s day story. It was February 14th, 1996.
    I was huddled over a Star Wars puzzle waiting for my sweet boyfriend to show up. He had a monster exam the next day, so I was stuck at home on Valentine’s Day killing time until he could take a study break and come visit me.
    I got the call that he was on his way. I beamed with excitement despite the fact that it would be a short visit since it was only a study break.
    Blasted exams. There should be a rule, no exams the day after a major holiday **smile**
    So, he shows up and saunters over to the little boom box I had in my tiny apartment. Seriously, it was like 600 sq foot apartment.
    He pops in a CD.
    I’m like, “Whatchya doin’?”
    “Oh, just putting it on a good song.”
    Soon Mariah Carey’s, “Anytime You Need a Friend” started flowing through the tiny speakers. I knew that was one of his favorite songs mostly because I liked Mariah Carey.
    “Hey, let’s dance.”
    Ok, now this was gettin’ weird. But I brushed the thought aside. He was just trying to be romantic on Valentine’s Day, right?
    So, we’re swaying to the soft music, and after a bit he slows us to a stop. I look up and he descended onto one knee.
    I almost fell over.
    He raised a tiny, opened box toward me. I saw a diamond sparkle and immediately gasped. My hands cupped my cheeks. I think they were on fire.
    He nodded and said the most wonderful words my ears have ever heard, “Will you marry me?”
    I don’t remember my exact response, but I know “yes” was involved.
    He slid the precious ring over my knuckle and it felt so natural, just like saying yes to spending the rest of time with him.
    “Oh, and the diamond is from my mom’s engagement ring,” he said. “We just picked out a different setting.”
    That did it. I bawled.
    To have such a strong momento of love on my finger, and from a marriage that had already flown past the two decade mark, I was honored.
    ***
    So, 13.5 years of marriage later….the love story continues.
  • WHAT ARE DOING THIS WEEKEND?
    I’m so glad it’s Friday. What a crazy, busy week. It went so fast and I feel like I didn’t get anything done. Ever feel that way? It’s amazing how quickly the time goes. So, I say, let’s all go check out a movie that’s opening this weekend…….
    [youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M5lSu6GkC2k]
    Fireproof
    “Never leave your partner behind”
    It’s an independent, faith-based movie. The bigger the opening weekend, the louder the statement. So, will you join me in going to watch this? Be sure to let me know what you think, OK?
