• THEN AND NOW THURSDAY—GUEST BLOGGER

    Hey everyone. Charlie here.

    March Madness has come and gone. Every year it’s exciting. How did you do in your bracket? I remember a gal I went to college with who actually picked the teams that had her favorite colors. I remember laughing at her….but that was short lived when she ended up beating me, go figure.

    I’m someone who watches b-ball with a passion and knows every team in and out, and then to get beat by someone who doesn’t know Duke from Eastern Tennessee Tech….Oh Well you win some, and you lose some.

    larry-bird-1984larry-bird-nowI was watching ESPN classic and they were playing the 1979 championship game…do you remember the 2 future Hall of Famers who played in that game?

    Yep you guessed it…Indiana St’s Larry Bird and Michigan St’s Irvin “Magic” Johnson. 2 names that really took basketball to a new level in the 1980’s.

    “Then” the players played differently, they were more “robotic” if you will, more scripted. “Now” the players are just sooo darn athletic, I’m amazed at the agility of today’s players.magic-johnson-in-college

    Basketball “then and now” were both great. Hopefully you magic-johnson-now1enjoyed this year’s NCAA hoops season.

    Did you have a TV growing up? Did it look like this?

    ~~~
    tv-braun-fh-1959I guess TVs have been aroud since the 30’s.
    Tiny little boxes with a small screen.
    And of course…
    In black and white, right?
    Does this picture look familiar?
    Oh, and only one per househouse, IF able to afford it. They cost around $696.00, so I’m told.
    But NOW…..
    Philips LCD from 2006
    Philips LCD from 2006
    Now, they come in every size imaginable, almost.
    They’re super thin with huge screens.
    A 46-inch Samsung might run you about $1700.
    Digital everything.
    Often households have more than one TV.
    Even mounted under kitchen cabinets. tv-under-kitchen-cabinet
    I could go on,
    but I think you get the picture.
    🙂
    ~~~

    Crazy the changes, huh?

    I wonder what’s going to be available fifteen years from now…

    Bikes…remember that old banana seat?

    Ok, most of you know I like to road bike. Give me bunch of water bottles strapped to my bike and warm, sunny day, and I’ll ride forever.

    Well … not forever, but you know what I mean.

    So, what better to do Then and Now Thursdays, right? Because, remember that bike you rode growing up?
    banana-seat-bike

    Oh, mine was Yellow, though. And had some flowers on the big seat, I think.

    No frills from the handlebars, though.

    I found a picture of an older Raleigh bike. vintage-road-bike I never had one that looked like that, but you know, they’re makin’ a come back, you know?

    But NOW,

    Oh boy. The technology has changed. It’s all about how light the bike is, things like that.

    There’s even something called a time trial bike.

    Way sleek and ergonomic so you’re in the best position to get the most power. time-trial-bike

    To tell you the truth, I never liked biking until about a year or so ago.

    I’d been big into inline speed-skating and was told I should “cross-train” with a road bike.

    I begrudgingly did…then totally fell for it.

    So, what kind of bike did you have growin’ up?

  • THEN & NOW THURSDAYS–Shelby Daniels Week

    Shelby here, again. Getting sick of me yet? Only a couple more days if you are. And I’m havin’ fun with this so hopefully you are too.

    So, Lynn tells me that Thursdays is something called, “Then and Now Thursdays.” Ok, I’m only nineteen years old, so the Then part would put me at, like, birth, so I’ll just try and do something interesting…

    I know it’s not Monday, but I have to talk about music here. I’m really into it.

    THEN:

    cd-picture2CDs came out before I was even born, right? Like, 1982 or something. They were sleek and looked way cool. You just slid them into your portable CD carrier and you were set!

    Loved it.

    8tracks18-tracks, my mom told me about those. They were, like, from the 60s or something. They were clunky-lookin’, huh?
    Can we say, “Archaeic?” Ok, CDs are still used a little but….
    NOW:
    ipodIt’s I-Pod, all the way.

    These first came out when I was, like, eleven or so.

    This is about the only way to go these days. I remember the first song I put on my I-Pod. It was, Get the Party Started, by Pink. Yeah, my mom wasn’t so happy.

    But now, it’s mostly Christian Rock. I’ve got a few songs in mind that I’d play on a soundtrack for the Light of Truth movies that’ll surely come.

    Lynn laughed until she cried when I told her about movies and soundtracks for the book. She’s, like, “Hey, God’s plan, not ours. The book may never even hit the shelves. You just never know what’s up God’s sleeve.”

    Typical thing she’d say.

    What’d you grow up with? 8-track? CD? I-pod? Radio only?

    Commericals. Oh, how they’ve changed over the years.

    Check this out.

    AND NOW:

    This was the 2009 SuperBowl ad.

    Usually it’s about the technology difference. Yeah, that’s there in these too, but something else caught my attention as well.

    It wasn’t so much about the hype, or loud music, or big stars promoting their product. It focused more on what this giant in the cereal industry is doing to better our country. That’s grrrrreat, indeed!

    What’d you think?
