Pikes Peak Conquered

This time last week, I was running—er—hiking up Pikes Peak. In all honesty, there wasn’t much running for a couple reasons. There were just too many people on the trail to move much, and…elevation kinda slowed me down. The race was on a Saturday (August 19th), and we drove up from Phoenix starting on Wednesday. Arrived early afternoon Thursday. We got settled, met up with Addie and Joni to pick up our race packets, then it was into the “hurry up and wait for the race” mode. A brief run on Friday to shake out the legs was helpful in[…]

Rim to Rim Adventure with my #TrailSisters

WOW. Yeah, I’m an author and I can’t think of a better word to describe my adventure yesterday. Starting at the North Rim of the Grand Canyon, then jogging/hiking to the South Rim. 25 miles.  10 hours total time. 7 hrs 45 minutes of jogging/hiking time. A challenge not made for the weary, that’s for sure. About 15 miles down, which is so hard on the legs, then about 9-ish miles back up, out of the Canyon. That’s where the challenge really starts as far as I’m concerned. Even after thirty minutes of rest and refueling at the bottom (Phantom Ranch),[…]

Major surgery…. a broken foot…. Bring on a 50-mile run!

Major surgery…. a broken foot…. Bring on a 50-mile run! Who would have ever thought, three years after major surgery, one year after having a broken foot, that I’d be running a 50-mile ultra marathon? Not me. But on December 3rd, 2016, I did, and here’s my story. **LOOOOOOOOONG POST ALERT** Writing a race report is cathartic for me, but it may help someone else looking to set a crazy goal and attain it. And for those who love details of how the goal was met, such as nutrition, issues that came up during the race, and play-by-plays…this is the[…]

Taking time to smell the roses #GetInspired

My next adventure is running the Grand Canyon! I’m super excited for a couple of reasons. First, it’s on my bucket list to run down to the bottom of the canyon and back up in one day. Second, it’s awesome Daddy Daughter time—YEP, my dad is running it with me! My super coach (and sweet hubby) has me on this wicked awesome (and tough) training plan. And today…I got to do a trail run. One of my favorite places is Deems Hills Trails. It’s amazing the sites offered right here in the middle of the city. So…I had to do[…]

Survival Mode

One morning I was messin’ around in my kitchen making breakfast after a run or bike (I can’t remember) and I heard the words “Ultra Marathoner” paired with “surviving four days in triple digit heat.” Being the athlete I am, my ears perked up, much like my dog’s do when it’s time to go running. So, I sat and listened to the GMA STORY. Gina Armenta had gotten separated from her running partner, then off the trail. No water. Nothing. She survived for four days! Triple digit heat. When asked what got her through, she said her family. Just the[…]
